British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons condemns new season of reality show
London, UK—25 April, 2005- The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (www.baaps.org.uk), the not-for-profit organisation established for the advancement of education and practice of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery for public benefit, today denounced the new season of Channel Five’s Cosmetic Surgery Live, and voiced serious concerns about the show’s inappropriate representation of the practice of plastic surgery.
According to Adam Searle, President of the BAAPS;
"I am appalled at the voyeuristic and pornographic extravaganza of the new series of Cosmetic Surgery Live, and condemn it utterly. The show does not portray the ‘real world’ of plastic surgery, and in fact does a disservice to thousands of patients who benefit from cosmetic procedures."
Some of the latest themes portrayed in Cosmetic Surgery Live which have incurred the disapproval of BAAPS surgeons include genital surgery and a simultaneous Ceasarean/Liposuction, which former BAAPS President Norman Waterhouse termed as 'dangerous' and 'highly unethical'.
The BAAPS is committed to promoting the highest standards of personal and professional conduct among plastic surgeons. Unfortunately there is little, if any, of these values depicted in the programme, therefore the Association sees very little value in the show as it is portrayed to the public.
According to Adam Searle;
"When it comes to health issues presented on television, public education and safety should come before entertainment."
